How Do You Train for Gain?

Posted August 10, 2011 1:06 PM

Our Careers item in this issue looks at the 'dos' and 'don't' of one of the most basic people development issues in the industry - how to train machine tool operators most effectively. So what is your experience? When your company buys new equipment does it send operators away to be trained before installation or wait till the equipment is installed? Does it exploit on-line techniques at all? More to to the point, what works best?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Machine Tools & Metal Working, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Machine Tools & Metal Working today.

One thing that helps is to make the "operator" part of the decision process for selecting the new machine. When someone in "management" makes the decision and then dictates what will be used there's always some push back no matter how good the decision is.

Get feedback from the operators BEFORE making any decisions. If the operators aren't happy production will suffer.

Happy Employees = Productive Employees.

The machine operators are possibly the ones with the most useful knowledge about what will work on the floor and what wont. Keep em in the loop, and all will be well.
