Having a vision for the future is critical for the spirit of an organization, country, family, etc. If we don't feel like we are moving forward we lose hope and enthusiasm for life and become complacent or at worst apathetic.

Having said that, the areas that we need to move forward in need to be according to the priorities we have and the funds available for each area. At the moment, we in the USA don't have any money to spend. We have very little money to spend in a discretionary manner.

Space exploration has a value but there are other areas with immediate ramifications in which the research money could be spent, i.e. energy, fuel, health research, etc., with a higher ROI.
