Rainwater Pump Runs On Sunlight

Posted September 22, 2011 1:20 PM

From TreeHugger:

ITT Flow Control recently announced the development of their new, solar powered RainPerfect Water Pump, which takes harvested rainwater in a barrel and pumps it through devices like garden hoses and sprinklers. This way, the rainwater is recycled, and consumers can water their gardens and lawns or wash cars without putting strain on the public water supply.

A brilliant idea, but here in England, if you have an outside water butt to collect rain water you have to notify the council and the water company, the reason being that all the rain that falls belongs to the water companies, and you have to pay a levy per cubic meter of water to the water company!

I know this may sound strange, but here in England we have some of the worlds most stupid laws and by-laws, myself I havn't told anyone that I have a water butt, so I water my garden every day through a dry season, I just hope that the council and water company don't find out about it!

I've never heard that one before! My parents have had a water butt for nearly 40 years....

And when it rains, the falling water can be used to generate electricity to charge the batteries to pump the water when the sun doesn't shine.

This product is a smorgasbord of green marketing buzz words....

...

...but, wouldn't it be more environmentally (and wallet) friendly,....

to skip the NiMH battery, solar cells, electronics, electric motor, and pump;.....

and instead opt for a stand to keep the tank a few feet above the ground to provide sufficient head for watering?

It is funny (and a little sad) that a website with a name like 'TreeHugger' is promoting this.
