Fire Scout UAV Makes First Biofuel-Powered Flight

Posted October 03, 2011 8:10 AM

From Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine:

The US Navy has successfully flown its MQ-8B Fire Scout Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) on biofuel. The unmanned helicopter became the Navy's first UAV to use biofuel technology when it took-off on Friday over Webster Field in St. Inigoes, Maryland, running on a blend of JP-5 aviation fuel and plant-based camelina. The Navy says that the use of this blend cuts carbon dioxide output by 75 percent when compared to conventional aviation fuel.

At what cost? Fuel is fuel - the machine doesn't know or care.

The military is the last place that the new fuels will be useful.

This is just a way the administration and green lackeys in it have of throwing more money off the back of the truck while praising themselves for being wonderful.

Guys, if you consider the military and all the rolling stock they have as well as floating stock and flying stock, you would come up with a very large amount of fuel used. If they can go to biofuel (not based on corn), we could get by with less oil used. I'm not a big proponent of Green energy, just using a little common sense.

Consider the day when we run out of oil. How is our military going to protect us? Go back to horses and horse drawn cannons?

We all use oil, and with a finite amount available on the planet, that day will come.

I do not question the need or usefulness of new fuels.

The military does not need more types of fuel to carry around the globe. They should be following on this - not leading.

This is just a government pushing a green agenda whether it makes sense or not.

Not to piss away government money on these programs through the military.

If the government wants to do R&D that is fine and one of it's functions. Just don't play the game through the military. There are government labs for the purpose.

This is another source of money for the green bunch to tap into as far as they are concerned. Easy money out of the military budget. The president has to love it as he will get the answers he wants - he is the head of the chain of command.

Can a plane fly on biofuels? Been done many times.

Can a ship or truck or tank run on biofuels? Of course

russ123, I fully agree with you, here in the UK I see the same kind of thing, when they could be doing something more useful or important, such as using this money to try to combat all cancers, but no, the military always comes first!
