F-35B Completes First Vertical Landing At Sea

Posted October 05, 2011 11:22 AM

From Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine:

The F-35B Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) has successfully made its first at-sea vertical landing. With Marine Corps test pilot Lt. Col. Fred Schenk at the controls, the short-take-off-vertical -landing (STOVL) variant of the F-35 touched-down on the deck of the USS Wasp on October 3 as part of an initial two week ship-trial period in which the aircraft's take-off and landing capabilities will be evaluated along with its ability to integrate with the ship's flight deck operations.

I have performed this maneuver in a Lockheed simulator. Unlike a convention aircraft or helicopter, the F-35 does this procedure mostly by computer with input from the pilot via the flight controls (stick, throttle, and rudders).

The throttle is essentially reconfigured into an altitude control and the side stick is used to hover forward/aft and left and right. Rudder simply spins you around.

If you pull your hand off the stick the aircraft simply stops what you were doing and hovers exactly where it was when you were on the stick.

While I am sure many changes were made to the flight mode configuration, the landing process was very surreal in the sim and easy to perform due to the computer augmentation of the aircraft.

Is this simulator available on home computer software?

Hmm... I was going to write PC but that seemed incorrect. Maybe HC for home computer just as HT is for Home Theater.

I seriously doubt it. The code is written deep behind the closed doors of Lockheed-Martin.

I have flown a number of their simulators, all different, and they are kind of tight lipped about the software details.

There is a consumer program called X-Plane that has a few F-35B models, but I can't say to what degree of accuracy they might be now. I tried an early version a couple of years ago to use as a means to demo our flight controls, but I did not feel it was representative of the simulators I have tried by Lockheed. However, I would expect that the real flight characteristics are held pretty close to Lockheed's vest.

So, you might want to look up X-Plane. You may find it fun.

AWESOME! Hope you can do it for real, someday! How great to have access to a Lockheed sim.

Chances are very unlikely. Long ago the military would do things like that, but after the mishaps like that sub crashing into a boat in the Pacific the military has all but totally eliminated civilians to ride in any machines.

Cool!!!

It's funny. When I was watching the youtube video, a pop up add came up, partially blocking the screen, for some Rosie O'Donnell trash TV show.

Yeah, but you don't need to worry, it won't pop up in front of the pilot on his HUD.

BTW. With all our defence cuts and the PM making daft "we're all in it together, lets make Britain great again" speeches, I'm just waiting for the next round of obscene bankers bunuses to trigger more rioting and strikes in time for the harshness of winter... (Now having said that, will I get a knock on the door from the Bill for incitement)
