Throwable 36-Camera Ball Takes Perfect Panorama Photos

Posted October 14, 2011 12:43 PM

From Extremetech:

Jonas Pfeil, a student from the Technical University of Berlin has created a rugged, grapefruit-sized ball that has 36 fixed-focus, 2-megapixel digital camera sensors built in. The user simply throws the ball into the air and photos are simultaneously taken with all 36 cameras to create a full, spherical (360-degree?) panorama of the surrounding scene.

The early 1900s Cirkut camera could take 360 degree photos, but not spherical, and it was a "bit" bigger and needed a tripod. I have a 1913 photo in front of me that is well over 90 degrees, and have seen (and been in) a 360 degree photo.

For Sebastian Anthony's[1] information, a 'spherical' solid angle is equal to 4. The SI unit of solid angle is the steradian (sr).

The Geek.com article (not the one referenced above) says: "As it detects that it is starting to fall (using an accelerometer), it fires all of it's cameras, putting image data to storage."

I wonder how it detects when it is starting to fall (highest point), because most of the trajectory will be at zero g. Perhaps it measures and integrates the initial acceleration of the throw and then simply calculate how long to delay the firing of its cameras?
