Posted October 20, 2011 7:27 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

An Alabama robotics company has constructed the mother of all military ground 'bots -- a mini-tank that weighs a whopping 4,500 pounds and hunts bombs. Just one problem: convincing the Army that it needs a robo-tank that might have come too late to help the Afghanistan war. Exclusive video.

So, is this a solution looking for a problem? How much more effective is this than other in-place techniques? How troop-friendly and deployable is a piece of equipment that weighs 4,500 lbs?

This seems to have been quite a R & D gamble.

FIRST, you have to effectively find the damn IED's and other booby traps, something that been needed for a long long time......very good sensors.

To me, a 4,500 pound robot is not easy to field and weights more than most mid-size sedans.....mobility of troops and bomb disposal units is paramount. This robot gizmo is like being tied to a ships anchor and making them sitting ducks for the enemy!
