The lab is actually open to the public as a museum. In the article attached, it says you need permission, but my wife and I just strolled in when visiting the city several years ago.

Whether you have to ask for permission to see it or not, it is very interesting. The only draw back is for non-German speakers. All of the display information there was in German.
