Log On and Drive?

Posted November 11, 2011 8:29 AM

Thanks to advances in wireless, we can now access the Internet via broadband connections even while on the highways. Car makers have (mostly) backed off from installing Facebook on dashboards, but what do you think of GPS systems that display directions on your windshield? A little guidance is welcome, but how can designers balance that against driver distraction or information overload for drivers experiencing congested, quickly changing traffic patterns? How much effort would you spend to optimize a windshield GPS? How much information is enough?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

Sorry to pour cold water on the "brilliant" idea. Many years ago it was explored, by proiecting normal TV soap operas. Really bad deflection of attention from driving. Same for GPS. Talking instructions, available from today's GPS are fine, tolerable. Do not reinvent the wheel.

I agree. there are already too many distractions for the not too bright inattentive drivers on the road today, without adding another source.
