Hold the Phone, the Tablet, the TV

Posted October 14, 2011 7:54 AM

The Kindle Fire e-reader seems poised to sell like hotcakes, but the market for new gadgets has gotten a lot tougher, even when the gadgets are amazing. Maybe Apple didn't introduce an iPhone 5 last month because they know that everyone is on a tight budget these days. Then again, consumers aren't just voting for cost-efficiency. (How can you justify buying an e-reader if you live within a few miles of a public library, for example?) Are you holding onto your tech for longer than you used to? What does it take to get you to open your wallet? What kind of breakthroughs would get you excited enough to run out and buy?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

I'd read that Apple didn't release the iPhone 5 because most of the people who own an iPhone 4 still have a year left on their phone contracts and would be reluctant to make the change at this time. So Apple decided to wait a year.

As to owning an e-reader/vicinity to a public library -- I own a Kindle and I live within a few miles of two libraries. I get books from the library almost every week, but there are some books that I'm reading through slowly, and would not be able to finish even within an extended borrowing time. Besides, there are thousands of free and/or extremely inexpensive books (including most of the classics) that can be downloaded to the Kindle and read at my leisure without worrying at all about returning them.

i love my Kindle. (We don't have public libraries like you have.) i can't read a paperback anymore, since my ancient eyes have got used to eInk (or whatever it is called). i am convinced that Kindle is a greater invention than the iPad from where i sit (being retired, i don't need most of what the iPad can do).

That said, we are planning to visit our son who lives in the US sometime early next year. One of the first things i intend to do is to buy the Kindle Fire. At $200, i think it is a steal

Is Kindle or a book from a library is better ? ..More than answering this question , what comes to my mind is that most of us ( pardon me if I am wrong ) have lost the reading habit ..it is not like how it was two decades before ... I too read a lot from net , but holding a book in hand is something special ....regards.

Oh, i must have read several thousand paperback books ever since i got bitten by the reading bug....1957 if i recall. Nothing quite like curling up with a good book i still say.

After the Kindle, i still manage to read maybe one ebook on an average of two days. i still curl up with my Kindle. Feels exactly like a paperback, better fonts in eInk if anything. And much lighter (Can you curl up with Ayn Rand, Leon Uris etc. ?)

Hold on. One major difference. Before 2010 May, i used to curl up with a book at bedtime, and fall asleep. The book would fall off. Can't afford to be so careless with the Kindle....the thing may break !
