MIT Admissions Dean Resigns After Fake Degrees Come to Light

Posted April 27, 2007 10:25 AM

From The New York Times:

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's dean of admissions, Marilee Jones, resigned Thursday and confessed to the ultimate sin of her profession: lying on an application. Jones, who had led the admissions office since 1998, falsely claimed degrees at three schools in upstate New York, an MIT spokeswoman said. In reality, Jones briefly attended just one of the schools, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and never enrolled at the other two.

Like so many employers, MIT didn't check references. Can you say, "Schmucks"?

The untruths aside; it appears that this individual held the position for 9 years, i'd assume successfully, at that.

That being the case, How much were the degrees needed for the job? Maybe just to qualify for the interview?

I've been told too many times that i didn't hold an advanced enough degree to "do that", and then actually doing it for the PhD candidate that was hired.

Maybe we've put too much emphasis on holding a degree because it is much easier than accessing capabilities?

Yes, you would think that in 9 years they would have figured out she could do the job. I have been hiring/firing people for my machine shop for over 25 years. It is NOT over their schooling that they get fired. I need employees who can do the work and do it correctly. Have found that more "education" from our schools does NOT mean they can do the job better.

What does a degree mean? That you can do school work well? Take tests well? Lots of time in real life that has NO bearing on you being able to do the job you were hired for.

If she were doing the job well, then leave her alone.

MrChevy-You are correct! Natural ability and curiosity are ingredients for a successfull career.-not a degree! The bottom line is -CAN YOU DO THE JOB-YES OR NO! James

Well, that being said, seems she lacked one important quality regardless of her performance and that is integrity! Or if you tell a lie big enough and long enough does it becomes the truth?

I'll agree: lies are never to be recommended, FULL STOP

However, if an organisation were to require en "excessively degreed" requirement for a position (i.e.: a PhD to proof-read novels) (i've personally known very intelligent individuals, who couldn't spell for beans!)

The real requirement is to be able to spell correctly, & see mis-spellings, not the advanced degree.

Isn't continually asking for qualifications not required almost begging for folks who know that, in FACT, they are ABLE to do the job to apply & "stretch the truth", because real performance will NEVER prove otherwise?
