FDR imposes nationwide gasoline rationing in order to stop Americans from indulging in nonessential driving during wartime. The point is not to save fuel but to conserve rubber, a desperately needed commodity in short supply.

Yup, WWII Gasoline Rationing was the result of the US loosing it's source of raw rubber (from rubber tree plants) which came from Southeast Asia, which the Japs had overrun in the early war years.

Can you imagine the whining that would happen now if we were hit by another OPEC Embargo, thus resulting in the US Gov instituting Gasoline Rationing? Since we're so dang reliant on foreign oil imports, it'll be much much worse than the OPEC Embargo of '73. This is how riots and wars start!
