Istanbul Prepares for Major Earthquake

Posted January 02, 2012 7:04 AM

From BBC News - Science & Environment:

The precise time and place of an earthquake cannot be predicted - that is what you will hear from any seismologist charged with monitoring the grinding and shuddering of the earth's surface in geologically active regions. But they can state with confidence in which areas there is a very high probability of a big earthquake, within a few decades.

I've lived in California, off and on, since 1964 and I don't know how times I've heard, "The Big One will wash California into the Ocean or You'll be able to but Beach Front Property in Nevada, or......." But, now the Eastern part of the US is having their own little shakers and these are the same people that swear they won't live in California, because of the potential of Earth Quakes. It just goes to show you, you don't have to live in California to have your cage rattled. I do know, Earth Quakes are one of life's little mysteries, we may never be able to predict. Ask any Geologist or Seismologist, who have been humbled by trying to predict Earthquakes. To me, that rates right up there with predicting the apocalyptic destruction of civilization. You can try and prepare for it, but you won't know for sure, until it happens. Japan thought they we're pretty up-to date with their building codes for Earth Quakes only to find on March 11 2011, a 40.5 meter(?) tsunami wave wiped out their East Coast. Like I said, you can try and prepare for it, but Mother Nature, will always have the last say-so in what the out-come will be.
