This Deadly Jet Boat Is a Pirate's Worst Nightmare

Posted January 17, 2012 3:00 PM

From Gizmodo:

The Ghost is designed to move fast in coastal shallows, making it ideal for convoy escort missions and patrolling aquatic flash-points like the Straits of Hormuz. Juliet Marine "has been studying the problem of how to counter swarm attacks for several years" and built the Ghost with the speed, maneuverability, and deadliness needed to combat the threat. While specific figures on the ship's top speed and range are currently unavailable, the Ghost will reportedly employ jet engines and supercavitating technology-extruding veils of air bubbles to reduce drag. It can also lift itself out of the water on its pontoons in order to navigate extremely shallow areas just off-shore.

Wild. I designed a larger ship using the same concepts. Estimated top speed was 110 knots. Mine was a bit bigger, 240 foot by 80 foot beam. Still want to build it.

From the article...

"The good news is that, once complete, it could be made available to private customers."

Customers like drug traffickers, or pirates?

Would seem a lot simpler to just take a couple of cargo ships or some old Navy supply vessels, repaint them and outfit them like the old Q boats and start sailing around the area. When the pirates make their move take them out with 50 caliber or 20 millimeter rounds.

A couple of old 40mm pom-poms would do wonders on reducing the pirate fleet and instilling some fear in the pirates themselves, maybe even enough that they'll find jobs ashore.

Since you want them to attack in International Waters to verify their piracy attempt you don't really need a shallow draft vessel. The Q boats killed enough submarines back in their day and the technology and necessary weapons are readily available to make them even more deadly and effective.
