Those were the days when men were men and women were not counted or allowed to join any good ol' boy's clubs. Tsk, tsk, and shame.

The Academy of Sciences is a society. It works on "concensus". Concensus has hardly anything to do with merit. But Marie Sklodowska (Curie) is up there with Maxwell, Einstein, Planck and Newton in establishing a new branch of physics.

You think, it is not part of our life right now? Do you think human nature changed?

Linus Pauling established stereochemistry (and won a Nobel), ascertaining that the shape of the molecules is essential to its function. Obvious by now to you and me. (and won a second (peace) Nobel). Had a lifelong skirmish with the medical society about the necessity of Vitamin C. Would you care to guess, who is right?!? Right, Pauling 1, society 0.

For independent research look up "H. Pylori". You will not know, to weep or laugh.
