Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

The World’s Most Dangerous Sport

Posted February 07, 2012 9:00 AM by dstrohl

For our carspotting exercise today, let's get away from the street scenes and parking lot scenes and instead travel with British Pathe to Bavaria in 1955 for a short film on motor skiing. The tow vehicles were rather interesting choices; can you name them all?

That looks fun!!!!

I can't name the cars, but it sure is amazing how much things have changed. Even thinking of doing something like that these days is probably illegal.

What's more amazing is that people from those times actually lived through them. Things are so much better, now that public safety is priority #1.*

We used to do that with snowmobiles. It was fun and worked both up hill and down hill... Even on a partially melted lake once.

The hardest was when we would cross another frozen track almost parallel to ours. It was very hard to prevent the skies from following the wrong one and we quickly ran out of rope...

I remember broken bones and teeth, multiple bruises, multiple scratches from hitting the snow crust at an un-natural speed.

Ha! the good old times...

We used to do it with snowmobiles, (well, one guy had a snowmobile), and the rest of us taking turns on a runner sled or toboggan behind it. Oh the pain that came with wipeouts. Man it hurt. Sure was fun though.

Probably yes to both.

I'm not allowed to get old...................wise is coming on pretty slowly too.

No more getting towed, but the wipe outs still hurt.

Looks like we may not get a winter this year. Not here anyway.

This looks like a hill where you could get a speed ticket while sliding...

Although, with these low snowbanks, you want to be careful, the trees are near...

The road was ice.............impassable by car. Probably didn't get close to the speed limit though. I guess I should at least put a helmet on the kid, even though we never used em'.

My family did a variation of this - using a four-wheeler to tow a plastic sled or a snow tube. We had lots of fields and when the snow was nice and crusty it was perfect. My dog used to run along behind. Sometimes she would grab me by the scarf and yank me off! We used to laugh so hard it was tough to keep going.

When I was a kid we did not use skis or sleds, we used old car hoods, so the towee had absolutely no directional control. If the tow driver happened to 'crack the whip' on a turn, it was wipeout time. What fun!

I was always a country boy, but I've met some city slickers that used to grab the bumpers of cars and use their shoes as skis. That sounds fun too.
