Take a Look at China's New Attack Helicopter

Posted February 07, 2012 9:45 AM

From Gizmodo:

The Chinese continue to upgrade their military to new levels. This is their new attack helicopter, the Z-19, a two-seater painted in badass black that looks a lot like the Eurocopter Dauphin.

I wonder who they envision as a potential enemy as they continue to build their military machine?

Maybe Taiwan.

Someone has to step in and fill the void left by the retreating US. . .

Potential enemies could be any country in Asia + Oz, then the USA.

Typical of them to copy anything they can....the F-22, the F-35, the F-16, this chopper, missiles & tanks. I could go on and on. It saves them a huge amount of development costs and testing costs, plus reduces the necessary time to get new models into the hands of their troops.

I wonder how capable it really is?

Hopefully less capable than the Soviets attempts to keep up.

I kind of like the idea of another cold war. . . Who'd have though we would ever look back at the cold war and think of it as "the good old days!"

Did the cold war end?

With the USSR, yes. But there are a lot of nukes floating around out there. The only difference is that there are a lot more players, and who knows what their intentions are?

Just no telling.

I think the Chinese are going to continue to have reliability problems for awhile with their equipment....................................on the flip side of the coin, they're also quick learners and getting better every day. They also have lots of money..............which always helps.

And they also have a huge standing Army, Air Force and Navy......and lots and lots of bodies to throw into any Hot War that can develop! They have over 2 BILLION people they can throw into any war....men, women and children; it doesn't matter to the powers that be that their citizens become cannon fodder!

Just imagine hoards of Screaming Chinese charging towards your defensive position....wave after wave of suicidal attacks thrown into the meat grinder. You don't have enough bullets, mortars or "Arty" to stop that. My late father experienced such during the Korean War. He and 4 others out of a entire US Army Infantry Company were all that survived such a conflagration.

Let's not forget that the PRC is still Commie, regardless how much most of the world views them as quasi-Capitalists. Once a Commie always a Commie in my book, and the Central committee still runs the "Big Show" and cracks down unrelentingly on internal dissidents. In others words, for the Chinese being somewhat Capitalists is only a Means to An End......to fuel their plans on ventures throughout Asia and the Pacific (including Australia and NZ), and to provide hard cash so as to develop a military on par with the currently technically advanced West.

I'm not too worried about that happening anytime soon. While the leadership focuses on potential external enemies, the real problem that's coming, is coming from within.

The more exposure the young people get to the outside, the more unsettled they become. They're very worried about their own people too. In fact these helicopters may have more to do with squelching internal strife than anything from the outside. It's not easy work to get 2 billion to comply, with an iron fist.

As far as the military buildup in general, if I was to guess, it's based on thinking forward to a time when they will need a strong military to protect the natural resources/raw materials that they are currently buying up around the globe, not about invading anybody. Much like the US example, I suspect that they will do whatever is necessary to protect their national interests..................wherever they may be.

I remember a program on BookTV years ago about China -- way before it became such a mainstream topic. Interesting stuff.

I was just listening to this and the introductory comments by Mr. Santoli are somewhat mind-blowing, given the date of the event. It gives some indication of how much we really knew about the terrorist threat long before 9/11.

It's interesting that the themes seem to be centered around, 'The Chinese threat to the US economy'. I would like to see something that discusses, 'The US threat to the US economy'.

Denial is a funny thing. China is merely capitalizing on the vacuum that the US and Europe have created through self "over" regulation. We've traded in productivity for blame assignment.

This talk/video isn't really centered around economics. It's broader than that. It's much more about putting current China (as of the time of the talk) in the context of their history. Very worthwhile. The very interesting intro. is around 17 min. It's all very interesting.

You won't be disappointed. It's obvious now, looking at it again, that the reason I remember it, is it IS impressive and sobering.

That's a good point especially when you remember Tiananmen Square was 22 years ago and the Freedom Genie has come further out of the lamp. Once that Genie comes out of the lamp it's very hard to stuff him back in and reseal him there. The present Eastern Europe is indicative of that what with many of the old Eastern Bloc now being members of NATO.

It is probably one of the reasons that China and Russia vetoed the Syrian-UN resolution. When it gets to the point that they are doing to their own what Syria is doing to their people they certainly won't want anyone telling them to cease killing their people nor want any isolation imposed on themselves.

Not to mention they are literally sitting on a time bomb to the south of them with the wacko nation of North Korea.

Yeah right! LOL

Nothing chills your mind quicker than sitting your arse within half a Klick away from the Inter-German Border (No Man's Land....NML for short) viewing Russian and East German troops looking back at you with their binoculars! Both sides (NATO & Warsaw Pact) employed millions of anti-tank and anti-personal mines along each side of the fence....scary place to be!

After doing 2 REFORGER TDY's to W. Germany back in the 80's as an Army Reservist, you get a different appreciation and slant on things about really how tense the Cold War really is (or was).
