FDA Completes Review of First Genetically Modified Animal for Consumption

Posted February 09, 2012 12:07 PM

From Discover Environment:

When most people say "genetically modified organism," they usually mean a plant-corn, perhaps, or an eggplant. But that may soon change. The FDA has completed its analysis of the first genetically modified animal likely to hit supermarket shelves: the AquAdvantage salmon, made by Massachusetts-based AquaBounty Technologies, Inc. Thanks to some added genes, the salmon grows 2-6 times the size of a normal Atlantic salmon in half the time, promising some respite for the planet's heavily taxed natural fish stocks, a third of which are near extinction or exhaustion. Talking Points Memo's IdeaLab reports that a source close to the review process says that the FDA's environmental impact statement, which looks at what effect the salmon will have on the environment and seems to be favorable, has been passed on to the White House's Office of Management and Budget.

Does anyone besides me see Cosby's "Chickenheart" in this news?

Just asking, is all.

Or maybe "the blob"? Or any of those other horrible 40's and 50's horror flicks?

I'll eat it.

If you follow the links, it says that they are using genes from the Pacific chinook salmon, combined with genes from something called the ocean pout. The meat is the same, it only affects appetite and growth.

That said, it's not something that they would want introduced into the wild as a breeding fish. The fast growth and constant hunger would turn it into a predatory species that could upset the natural order of things.

Just like everything else, the status quo is unsustainable.................we're only going to be able to drag nets through the oceans for so long, before the fish are gone.

These aren't GMO, but as far as I'm concerned, the more of this we do, the better. The fishermen don't like it, but they also don't like burning up a bunch of fuel and coming up empty.

Yeah. My comment was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as I think that if we're CAREFUL, those horrible "Science gone wild" scenarios do not have to happen.

And I'm with the folks in North Carolina. I live in Northern Virginia, where that 5 month cycle is about all we'll get, but I'd like to try, small scale, and for personal consumption, both Fresh-Water Shrimp and Tilapia.

OTOH, neither of those is genetically modified in any way. Fresh-Water Shrimp are just the salt-water varieties allowed to slowly acclimate to fresh water while still very young. And, MAN, are they good eating! Tilapia, though, don't have to acclimate to anything. But they, too, are semi-tropical, and thus limited in cycle times in these climates.

But as a trial, prior to retiring to a life of "Gentle-folk farming", which my wife and I are looking forward to, those would be good eating.

But I would submit that, just on an intellectual basis, any food that artificially combines genes from multiple sources is, by definition "GMO" food. And the fish in question fit the definition, I think.

Oh yeah, the salmon are GMO. I meant the shrimp aren't.

I'm with you..............those fresh water shrimp are awesome. Same with Tilapia. I usually catch and release the native fish around here. If I want to eat some, I'll get some Tilapia or farm raised catfish..................fairly cheap and really good eating. Plus I don't have to clean them.

It doesn't take GMO for humans to screw things up...............do you have carp in your lakes and ponds up there?

They make great fish egg vacuum cleaners.

Yep on the Carp. We also have the snake-heads, apparently. Though I don't know anyone who has see any.

But the HOA where I live has introduced Japanese Koi, which are really large goldfish, which, in turn, are carp, into a pond that USED TO BE stocked for fishing. At least they haven't put any in the bigger lake, though. But they did make the lake, which has some big cats, catch and release. And all without asking the opinions of "we who pay for the lake".

Ah, well. I guess if we let them keep it up, before long, it will be true that "All meat comes from the store, everyone knows that".

I prefer to raise , catch or shoot, and slaughter and butcher my own. Hard work, but the rewards are worth it.

I tried to figure out the mentality behind introducing carp back near the turn of 20th century. Sure you can eat them, but they're about the boniest, hardest to catch, worthless things out there. What were they thinking? You don't have to answer that.

I don't have the patience for hunting. Can't complain though. I've got a couple of friends that kill more deer than they can eat. I'm right here to take anything they don't want.

I'll never belong to an HOA. I've heard more stories about HOA remorse than I can count.

Koi???? How cute. What's wrong with bass, crappie and catfish.

Me, too. But trout seem to like colder water than we have here, so they don't breed very well at all here.

I grew up in Ct stream fishing for trout almost daily. I wish they were closer to me now.............have to go to the mountains though.

Although the ocean going, gray and speckled trout are fun to catch and good to eat................they don't get released.

If I get some of those while I'm at the ocean, I'll go empty out the crab trap, steam and clean the crab, chop up some green onions, mix that and a little butter, salt, bread crumbs and lemon juice with the crab, stuff it in the trout, bake and eat.

Unfortunately, I only get one week at the ocean per year, and my wife hates fish, so I make sure to get my fill of seafood while I'm on vacation. Spaghetti tonight.

OK. Well, thanks anyway. Call me next year?

I'll invite you up for pulled pork barbecue from the pigs we slaughtered in return.

(Not to worry. I can't cook, but my wife is a Tennessee girl. I know you Carolinians believe no barbecue is as good as yours. Shoot, Tennesseeans feel the same way about theirs. But she'll give you a run for your money, regardless.)

"Koi???? How cute ugly. What's wrong with bass, crappie and catfish."

Nothing I know of. Any and all are preferable.

Can't stand my HOA, but don't have any choice where I live. The county and state WANT HOAs, cause then they only have to deal with the group, and the individual only comes into it for criminal matters.

Course that doesn't help when the HOA is criminal, or wishes to be. Mafia style politics abound even at the level of an HOA, particularly when you have more lawyers per capita than nearly anywhere else in the US! And lawyers seem to gravitate to HOAs. Maybe its cause they are taught to run ruin other people's lives.
