Neutralising Africa's 'Exploding Lake'

Posted February 13, 2012 11:17 AM

From BBC News - Science & Environment:

More than 1,000 people died in 1986 when a lake in Cameroon released a cloud of CO2 that suffocated entire villages. A much larger lake in Rwanda - with two million people living nearby - is also at risk of eruption, but plans are afoot to make it safer.

Looks like a good spot to set up an IPCC CO2 monitoring station to further the cause and get the numbers up.

GA. it also points to a good example of natural CH4/CO2 sources that are sorely missed in the IPCC monitors. The undersea release of methane from earthquakes and hydrate exposure is likely much higher than they can even imagine. This lake is just a very small amount compared to ocean releases. Google Storegga slide and get some small idea about the amount of methane being released and not near proper monitoring. Add to that the many tremors and earthquakes under water. And then add all the small discharges from lakes and wells. This is my strongest criticism of the green house gas monitors and attempts to foist it all on anthropogenic causes. Yeah, show me the report that says the Storrega slide had minimal effect, I know it exists. Funny we entered a cold spell 8000 years ago that coincides with this one slide.Do we yet know what happened in Japan last year. Not likely because it is too difficult to monitor.
