From the linked article:

"There are lots of reasons behind our current predicament," Carpenter said. "But what it boils down to is the simple fact that when John and I went to work for this country, the United States was recognized around the world as a can-do nation. We have become viewed around the planet as a can't-do nation and I deplore that."

Sadly, I deplore that, too.

40 years ago we were walking on the moon. We've come a long way.

John Glen is not only a hero for America but also a hero for all mankind. Not only was he the first person to touch the moon but he also was the oldest astronaut to fly in space at the tender age of 77. That is also a good message for all of us to remain curious and not afraid of moving forward. John Glen is now 91 years young and a real treasure. Keep on rockin' John.

John, Glenn never went to the Moon. He had one orbital flight in 1962 and was subsequently grounded by NASA (because of his national hero status and NASA was afraid of an accident taking his life) despited repeated attempts to continue to return to space.

John made one more final trip into space after begging NASA for years at the age of 77 (he was the oldest astronaut in history) on the Space Shuttle STS-95.

The closest John Glenn ever got to the Moon was when Quincy Jones presented John with a copy of his record "Fly me to the Moon".

Thanks for the correction. I think the synapses were firing wrong when I posted and I mixed Glenn with Armstrong. Aging is great....but I think my memory is history.
