Considering the age of the current Air Force, Navy and Marine fighter air craft, and the fact that the current commander in chief sacked the F22 Raptor, we need this Air Craft to keep up with the Chi Coms who are spending our cash to build a better military. Prior to WWII the Japanese bought tons and tons of scrap iron and scrap steel from America and they gave it back to us in the form of bombs, Air Craft Carriers, battle ships, and other naval vessels. We sold the USSR tons and tons of wheat to keep them from starving and our payback was the cold war. Keep ahead of them so they cannot take advantage of us.

The reality of mankinds nature is that without principles to live by there is a propensity for someone who is stronger than another to seek to dominate another weaker individual or group of people/country for their own gain. The Chinese are not our friends! They are almost exclusively diametrically opposed to us in philosophy of living and government and therefore we have to be prepared militarily to counter possible aggression.

There are many instances throughout the world's recent history to establish the fact of people not being prepared and consequently paying the price for being "sheep". Check out article by Col. David Grossman, ret., On Wolves, Sheep and Sheepdogs.

There are certainly abuses in the procurement program and the military which need to be addressed. Much of that would be remedied if politicians would stay out of the mix (other than okaying the expenditures of funds). If that is the only gauge by which we determine the value of a program we should look at the waste of government welfare programs where studies show about 80 cents of every dollar is waste or fraud.

If we are standing still in anything, economically, philosophically, physically, relationally, etc. we will be left behind. We do not live in a static world and someone else will always be out there working harder and trying to improve.

The military has always been the most efficient way of wasting resources. Of course the establishment wants to keep things as they are no matter the cost and the military power ensures access to resources.

The aircraft itself is a brilliant piece of engineering but unfortunately useless for the humanity, unless aliens are going to attack .

If those people that build weapons were to build technology that supports life, that would make the world a little better place to live in.

All true, but our nature, as human beings, prevents us from doing that.

All one has to do is to look back into the pages of history (modern to ancient) to see that it has always been that way and there is not the slightest evidence that will change anywhere in the future.

With all our technology we are far more likely to find the end of Pi than the end of war.

I still hope and work for changes. I've noticed a lot of people that want that so i'll keep trying.

PS: By ''nature'' you mean education ( lack of it) and the social environment that brainwashes children?

And yes I have looked at the history but that does not say we cannot change.

By nature I meant that as a species our behavior is such that we are aggressive creatures and that appears to be genetic. That has nothing to do with education. For example, may of history's greatest conquerors were well educated. If anything, education seems to foster better ways of conquering and controlling those that are not.

Note that when a dictator regime rises to power or conquers another nation that many times the educated scholars are often imprisoned or more likely killed. It is the free thinkers that are the least useful and the most likely to be eliminated. This happened in the ancient past and continues today. It is oppression.

As for saying we can not change I am a little more pragmatic. I always look for ways to change, but I am a very big fan of the "Speak softly and carry a big stick" foundation.

Unfortunately, geopolitics is an extremely complex subject. We would like to distill the operating manual for the world on a single poster board with a stick. Many have tried and still do, but the platitudes and catchy quotes fail to capture the truth in geopolitics and many times (if not always) these poster bearers are simply manipulated idiots for someone else's political cause.

I would prefer to work for peace, but I also want to be a well armed sheep.

If you want to expand on the geopolitical workings of the world or things like the "Balance of Power Theory" I would be willing to put more time in, but it would be a wordy subject and I also have a regular job to do. In the end you will realize that theory and reality tend to exist on opposite ends of the spectrum. Peace may be theoretically possible, but it has always been transitory and fleeting at best. Predicting events geopolitically is next to impossible as we are always surprised by actual events and the ever changing dynamics of power.

Plato wrote, "the penalty for not participating in politics is that you will be ruled by your inferiors." That is not bound simply by local politics, but applies world-wide.

Right on AH, I'm in absolutely full agreement with you on this!

Good 'Ole TR was very correct regarding his "speak softly and carry a big stick" philosophy.....as the world is still very dangerous place, and unfortunately Homo Sapiens have yet to evolve enough not to be violent....this has been demonstrated time and again throughout of history on this planet, after all it's been a very short climb down from the tree so far.

What's your spin on it?

You live in a region that has seen thousands of years of violence, oppression, and conquerers from external nations. Others may be internal struggles and there is the European Revolutions of 1848, which started internally and spread throughout Europe. Romania was in the heart of that.

My guess is that geology plays an important role as people struggle for resources and defensive positions.

In some cases it is a matter of survival as one nation captures another to subjugate its population and actually assimilate those people (by interbreeding) into their own. Other reasons may be ridding the populace of the yoke of tyranny.

So, there are many reasons I can think of and our inherent violent genetics easily facilitate these conquests and revolts for freedom.

As a society you have had to live though some millenniums of interesting times, whereas the United States has but a few hundred years and a large melting pot of populations.

I think it is more about the lack of resources and the values (distorted and distructive ones)that we still promote as opposed to genetics. History is well... history. it can tell us how things were but considering the future the topic is open for discussion.

Yes, my country had some quite rough times in the past but now it seems like people want to work against nature. I mean what is the point of competing with one another when there is no need to. C'mon, the only threat for the human race is...the stupidity of human race. And there is plenty of it.

A rough example would be that two people have greater odds of survival that one man, in any environment. Nature isn't perfect either but the behaviours are based on the same principle: resources. In this way we can see that we are no smarter than a monkey. Some evolution, isn't it?

Well, for all of the bloody history to have unfolded we required that aggressive underpinning in our genes to make it happen.

Of course, if we were totally passive creatures we would have been extinct a long time ago. Some humorous examples:

"Oh, there is a raging forest fire coming. Well, at least we will be warm for life."

or...

"Look! A lion! He looks hungary. Well, might as well walk his way to save him some steps."

or...

"Wow, look at all those angry people with painted faces and long pointy sticks charging our way! I better put on some large kettles of soothing camomile tea..."

Okay, just taking some time here for some good fun, but our nature is a two-edge sword. It serves us for survival and it also can kill us. Everything has its price.

I find that the older I get, the more cynical I get. Now, I am always wary of the intentions of anyone that has anything for sale.

Another benefit of growing older, seems to be that we care less what other people think about us, making us more vocal about our painfully earned wisdom.

On the other hand, I may just be a grumpy (and dirty) old man.

We have enemies. They will attack us if they can get away with it. The world is starving and the third world gangs that run starving places use starvation as a political tool. Somalia is a country without a government and is run by tribal gangs and most of Africa isn't much better. Our own Government has and is promoting the same anarchy they stand against in places like Tunisia, Lybia, Egypt and Syria. Would the US Ferderal Government statnd fotr a takeover here like they promote there? The entire middle east has the character of a badly mannered child.

Our military needs to be in a position to deliver an effective effort at all times and much to the behest of those that want swords to be beaten into plowshares, it is unlikely that a weak military will serve us well and that military needs to plan into the future.

The US military is a needed stick in a pound of hostile dogs.

It was not the current Commander-in-Chief (aka the Prez) who sacked the F-22A Raptor, but rather Congress....the USAF wanted it!

Let's keep the politics out of this discussion, please!

Don't get me wrong about my stance because I love fighters, but this F-35 Lightning II program should have been cancelled years ago at because of the massive cost overruns. I have said it before (in other threads) and I'll say it yet again. IMO, the USAF, the USN, the USMC and our allies could have spent the $$$$ (or Euros or Oz Dollars or NZ dollars, etc) designing and fielding new improved variants on the already-proven fighters in their arsenals.

To me, this is the re-visitation of Bob McNamara's nightmare of the 1960's where he demanded that the USAF and the USN develop a fighter with commonality under the TFX program.....history is repeating itself yet again. When will we ever learn this when it comes to the Military-Industrial Complex (and military projects & procurement) that Eisenhower warn us about back in the late 1950's? You DO remember the TFX Program and all of the media hyperbole and Congressional flak back then? I do, even though I'm a huge fan of the Aardvark...

Anyhow, under Sec Def McNamara the USAF went on to develop the highly successful F-111A Aardvark (and later variants including SAC's FB-111A), whereas the USN dropped the development of the F-111B Vark due to size, weight and non-commonality problems. What resulted (for the US Navy) was the design, development and finally fielding of the famous and most capable Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

All-in-all, one cannot make the F-35 a "shoe that fits all". Enough said.

Interesting that the United States' military expenditures exceed the sum of the next 28 countries' military expenditures combined.

Back in February Pres. Obama signed an order to manufacture and field 30,000 domestic surveillance drones by 2015. That's right, domestic surveillance drones. In-your-backyard surveillance drones. Why?

Joint strike fighter. The FA18 and the F15 strike eagle started out to be an aircraft suitable for carrier use and land use and somehow it worked. Both Aircraft have served us well. The Russians are on a path to belligerence again and have a new M.I.G. that on paper at least will out run, out fly, out perform and fly circles around out current best of the bunch. There is nothing better in war than air superiority. That has been proven over and over in the history of modern warfare. So my engineering friends, until the world leaders decide that war is a loosing proposition, we need to be armed and ready. Nothing would be nicer than not to even need a military, but it is definitive nonsense to think that the world is going to change anytime soon. We should always think like boy scouts and "Be prepared".
