Can Honda Turn It Around?

Posted March 16, 2012 9:00 AM by CarDomain

Seems like Honda turned away from the enthusiast years ago, but with the latest Civic, even the mainstream press and average consumers started to balk. Market share has been slipping and Honda corporate has finally realized that it's time to take the company back from the bean counters. Read this article at Automotive News and let us know if you think Honda can turn it around.

Glad to hear that somewhere the bean counters have been put back in their place. The best a bean counter can hope for is that they slow down the death of a company. No bean counter ever made a company excel and they need to be reminded of that.

The first sign I noticed Honda's slide to mediocrity was the demise of the original Insight, the first mass produced hybrid vehicle. The 70 MPG rating of this tiny two seater vehicle certainly was not meant for everybody, but it demonstrated some truly exceptional engineering capabilities. IMHO Honda blazed and then abandoned the hybrid vehicle trail with this vehicle.

To me, Honda makes good but boring vehicles. The only one I would consider is the Civic natural gas version, because it is natural gas. However it is not bifuel, and I live in an area that has no public CNG stations. Most areas do, however. It also charges an stiff premium for the CNG version, which means a very long payback. I would consider their Odyssey minivan in CNG, if they offer it, and start selling CNG around here.
