Double Barrel Handgun Means You Only Have To Be Half as Accurate

Posted March 12, 2012 11:26 AM

From Gizmodo:

They say one is the loneliest number, and nowhere is that more true than with handguns. So Arsenal Firearms has created a double barrel .45 caliber handgun that delivers two simultaneous rounds every time you pull the triggers.

As if a regular .45 ACP were not enough of a bigmouth.

Practical application factor? Low.
"I've got the newest, coolest thing on the range today." application factor? High.

My point exactly. If one .45 hollow point round won't stop your target, two rounds will just make them very angry at you. The idea that two rounds next to each other increases the stopping power just seems wrong to me.

Saw the pistol image and Doc Holiday popped into my head:

Billy Clanton: Why, it's the drunk piano player. Your so drunk, you can't hit nothin'. In fact your probably seeing double. (Billy Clanton draws a knife)

Doc Holiday: (takes out a second gun) I have two guns, one for each of ya.

Stupid idea.

The last time I looked at the FBI stat's on shootings by law enforcement officers in combat situations (high stress) the law officers hit their intended targets 27% of the time.

So, now you've got two errant deadly projectiles flying toward unintended targets 73% of the time????????

Stupid idea.

Story goes that the FBI ditched the 10 mm pistol because the women had a hard time with the muzzle rise. One agent fired her pistol at a range and flipped up so quick that she accidentally pulled the trigger again, killing herself with a shot to the head.

At that point the FBI eliminated that pistol.

I heard the story I posted years before your link's date, so it must be a different incident or maybe it is another urban legend. I don't know.

Is it April 1st already?

Reminds me of the Dodge Tomahawk in its ridiculousness. Marketing teams, just say no to drugs.

Seriously, are we so lazy that we cannot pull the trigger of our semi-auto handguns twice!

Anyone who works with handguns knows that getting hit with a .45 round is quite distracting and makes it rather easy to follow up with a second or third round into the same target.

And good luck trying to hold and aim this oversized marketing 'gimmick' (which is all this thing really is) with one hand, its 50mm (2 Inches) wide!

Re: Double Barrel Handgun Means You Only Have To Be Half as Accurate

I've been thinking about this.

How about lock time? With a single pull of the trigger you fire two entirely seperate lock systems which MUST be EXACTLY the same action time for some consistent performance. Sear release, firing pin length, mainspring reaction time... all of these must be the same, and must stay the same throughout the service life.

A well made pistol is a pleasure to hold in your hand, but let's face it: they are a pretty simple machine, there's not a lot of elegant clockwork inside the frame.

Let's say we can time these two to initiate within 1 millisecond of each other. In one millisecond a bullet at 840 FPS (this on the slow side) travels ten inches. With this lag alone, one bullet can be 5 inches downrange before the second cartridge fires. This ignores the deflagration rate of the powder charge varying from shell to shell. Two hits on an orange? Really? Maybe once in a while.

Practicality factor? Even lower than my previous comment.
Man-o-man I want to shoot one of these! factor? Still pretty high.

If the two barrels can be fired independently, you are right. If they share a common lock system, maybe.

They don't show pictures of any targets, do they?

It has to weigh a ton, too.

As Adam Savage has said so many times, "Its all about the KABOOM!"

Regardless of the practicality and the amusement factors, let me ask you about the business factor. Would you want to own this pistol or another for the same price?

Yikes! KABOOM indeed!

I drove around the interweb after I posted. Have a look at the Yootoob video placed by the manufacturer. THAT is a handful of pistol!

For some reason I can't get to the Arsenal Firearms website. Overloaded with traffic?

I remember that I read there yesterday that you can select the pistol to fire each barrel independently, or both simultaneously (complicating the lock timing issue).

Business factor? I cannot find a suggested price for one of these, but I suspect you might be able to get two for a king's ransom. Owning one... I see this as a (probably) very expensive and dangerous toy rather than something intended to be sold to an average pistol afficianado. I do not foresee one of these in Doorman's pistol locker anytime soon.

It looks like this can be ordered with either independent or joined triggers, but it's not selectively convertible.

I think I read in one of the articles a seven (eight maybe?) round magazine on each side is standard.

I have a Glock 21 with factory 13 round mags and two round extensions. So if I start with one in the pipe I get 16 rounds without a reload, 46 round with two reloads. That is just over 1-1/2 pounds of lead downrange, using 240 grain slugs.

That seems like a lot of extra mechanism (and like you said, carrying weight) for two extra shots before reload.
