Backpack Radar Can Detect Ambushers Within 150 Acres

Posted May 30, 2012 7:25 AM

From Popular Science - New Technology, Science News, The Future Now:

SpotterRF M600C Offering a motion-sensitive look from a long way away. SpotterRF If you're a soldier suspecting an ambush, you probably don't have much time to spare, and you definitely can't afford to be carrying any unnecessary weight. That's why so much military tech involves shrinking whatever's portable, and why, now, a company has thrown its radar-in-a-backpack into the ring.

I see a neat toy looking for an application. Presumably due to the present cost the developers of this device are trying to find a military application but ambush detection is not it. Teaching our soldiers that their own senses is insufficient to guard against an ambush seems like a perfect recipe for an ambush. Haven't these guys seen the ending of the movie Predator.

I find claymore mines and air support work just as well when in a potential ambush situation.

Ahhh Claymore mines with trip wires are the ticket.....but point it the right way or you'll blow your fool head off! LOL Ditto with flares outfitted with trip wires, so as to give you a heads-up that someone is within your perimeter. I agree that soldiers must rely on their own senses first to aid in detection of the enemy; trained and developed over time....

I really wonder if this gadget would work in a jungle environment. I tend to think not. When I was in Jungle Training School (Panama) you couldn't see much beyond a meter because of the heavy dense foliage.....much like SEA.

The portable radar idea is potentially useful in some circumstances and environments but I think if you want it to be truly effective and reliable you really need it high and line-of-sight.

Even then it is still just a tool and should never truly be relied upon 100%.

Agree 100% with your comments.......proper defensive perimeter by sentries should never be substituted by gadgets.

It's amazing how the human senses (especially hearing and smell), once acclimated to the given surrounds, can pick up the slightest trace of an intruder, especially during the nighttime hours. Can augment with the electronic toys and a well trained K-9.

So, "... Can Detect Ambushers Within 150 Acres"

How far away is that? A strip of land 1/2 acre wide and 300 acres long? A square, just over 12 acres on a side?

Manufacturers sellsheet, which says "Capable of tracking a walker moving anywhere within 150 Acres." Well, okay.

Well I guess that it depends a lot on which type of walker.

Hyuk yuk yuk!
I never miss a chance to tell a few Chuck Norris jokes:

Ghosts sit around the campfire at night and tell Chuck Norris stories.

When the boogeyman goes to sleep, he checks under the bed for Chuck Norris.

If you have five dollars and Chuck Norris has five dollars, Chuck Norris has more money that you do.

They say that Chuck Norris has no chin, underneath his beard is just another fist.
