One Tough Screw

Posted May 18, 2007 8:45 AM

It's a match made in screw heaven: commercial construction decking screws designed to be installed via their own patented and proprietary drive system. These newly engineered screws work with virtually any type of composite construction material. Their drive system delivers "maximum torque for fully driven screw outs or stripped recesses." An undercut head guarantees a smooth surface finish without unsightly burns or mushrooms.

Well, wonderful! Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I find there's a new way of getting screwed.

Did you really expect anything else?

My observation has been these screw makers tend to put out a torque fitting that is specific for their product and sometimes works better and sometimes is just a marketing gimmick

And sometimes so some jerk with a screwdriver can't steal the toilet seat.

I have been using these screws on fencing. We have an 80 pound dog who jumps on the fence, and nailed boards don't have a chance. I use a half inch drill with a S2 bit to install the critters. The recessed square hole holds the screw on the bit much better than a Phillips head or a slotted head. These are the only way to fly if you are seriously screwing around.

Sincerely

Bill

Lately I've had the opportunity to try any number of new drive configurations packaged with fasteners at my Big Box Store. Any number of them are improvements on a standard Phillips and for power equipment anything is better than a straight slot.

But they better keep throwing the drive bits in the box for free.
