The Decades-Long Search for the Higgs

Posted July 05, 2012 10:30 AM

From Phys.org - latest science and technology news stories:

It was a little over two years ago that the Large Hadron Collider kicked off its search for the Higgs boson. But the hunt for the Higgs really began decades ago with the realization of a puzzle to be solved, one that involved more than just the Higgs.

Quoting one of my favorite (political) elocutionists:

'Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns, there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns. That is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know.' ~ (Donald Rumsfeld)

So , insofar as the Higgs Boson --- We remain pretty certain that it's a known known, and we will remain adamant that it IS a known known, until sufficient data is acquired to *prove* otherwise (which, if that happens, will be a 'pleasant surprise', pointing us in a new direction).

I'm only waiting for them to announce they can cause a leg of mutton to appear.

It's all good news... ever since they got the LHC on quest for the Higgs, I've been wondering whether black holes in the cosmos are evidence of particle physicists on other planets. Apparently not.
