The Tangent Side

The science is always wittier on the Tangent Side. Here you'll find puzzles, games, and a hand-drawn webcomic aimed to reveal the humor that sometimes only a technical mind can appreciate. The Tangent Side comic was created by Doug Terhune (Juzek89) originally as a fun project/distraction amidst the rigors and long lectures of engineering college.

Ummm. Let me guess.

Polar bear caught in a snowstorm?

An equation describing Obama's understanding of economics?

Your rigorous solution for the Reimann Hypothesis?

If that's an multiple choice, I would have pic'ed the second one, but it's too light, it would have to have been dark........ Pitch black that is.

Hope for change.

This is the silliest of April Fool jokes since it is not April. There is a picture I cannot see, it asks me to sign in but then refuses me entry.

IT IS AN ANNOYING WASTE OF MY TIME.

I also am underwhelmed.

What happened to weapon pits and breastworks? They weren't comical despite the name.

does it have to do with the muzzle end being at the same height as the target?

It would only "ease calculation" if the nozzle and the target were at the same elevation, no vertical difference to deal with. Burying the gun doesn't necessarily achieve that though.

If it was my comment that was considered bashing, I apologize to Doorman, only he probably won't see it as he unsubscribed.

I was under the impression his comment was posted when the picture wasn't appearing, hence "I don't see (literally) the humor".

When I said it applied equally whether or not the picture loaded, I was actually bashing the cartoon for being obtuse, not Doorman's sense of humor.

Ease calculations? What could be easier the putting the laser pointer on the target and pulling the trigger.

Oh I know it's the calculators these young kids have the can't handle the percussion of the gun. So after the first shot their done. No math skills!

Bog help those wannabe Physics and Engineering majors back at uni who were called upon to solve trajectories having terminal points which differed in elevation. It was kind of amazing to see how many of them gagged on such simple problems and who either dropped out, became Business majors (yes, Business majors) or who joined the military thinking they would never have to solve such problems in the field (true enough these days as those who went on to become engineers, scientists and mathematicians designed the machines which do all the heavy lifting for them). Those going into the military are partly responsible I'm sure for the public perception that the military does not attract the most stellar intellects as a rule (with apologies to the exceptions), hence the 'toon? My two pesos' worth.

Well if you need to be nit picky. A 2K ton at 18,000+ feet away doesn't count.

Now if it was a 500K or bigger I would say the +- 18,000 feet part would still be close enough for most purposes.

I worry when articles like that start showing up in the media...prepares the masses for unexpected things.

Like Israel tossing a little one on Iran's centrifuge facility and blaming it on a meltdown....with our blind eyed blessings of course.

This is a little off topic, but there is always saber rattling going on that is designed for creating an anxiety for target nations.

The goal for such ramblings is to keep the adversary guessing at what might really happen. The whole thing boils down to gamesmanship of capabilities and willingness of a nation to follow through on implied threats.

In this case, Iran is clear on the capability of the US and Israel, but the willingness is the guessing game.

Finally, the only card Iran has is shutting down the Strait of Hormuz. This is why the recent build up of US warships has taken place. Neutralize that potential threat and the power it holds evaporates (which we pretty well have done).

All this posturing is strictly a public relation thing and has little to do with what is really happening behind closed doors. Two different things altogether. What's played on the news is not necessarily a good indicator of what is happening.

All true. What everyone keeps ignoring is that Iran's oil reserves will run out in about 20 years so they will have to start importing their own if they can't switch to nuclear power plants.

They are already drilling sideways into other countries reserves.
