New Cars Present Dangers For First Responders

Posted August 17, 2012 9:00 AM by CarDomain

Sure, they're safe, but new cars are also a bear to cut into when the need arises. High-strength steel, complex electronics, and pillars and panels stuffed with airbags all conspire to make life more difficult for the first responders who might have to cut you out of your car. And to make matters worse, there hasn't been a lot of dialogue between the industry and the rescuers on the front lines. Still and all, I'd probably rather be in a new car in the event of a bad wreck. Maybe just not a hybrid. See the news video below the jump, and the story at USA Today, via Autoblog.

Unless there has been a drastic change in the deign of vehicles in the last 10 years I can tell you from first hand experience that when scrapping out a vehicle body for iron salvage the old vehicles put up far more fight and require far more work effort to cut apart and break down than any newer one ever has.

The new steels may be stronger but there is so much less of it used that cutting through it with a basic chop saw or cordless saber saw is nothing where as every older vehicle I have scrapped rarely took anything less than the plasma cutter and oxy torch for cutting it up.

The German Automobile Club ADAC made a helpful campaign about one or two years ago.

They initiated the development of rescue papers for different types of cars where rescuers can see where the best cuts are made and where, as an example, dangerous parts as batteries, gas generators for airbags etc. are situated.

Many car manufacturers have supported this campaign. So anybody can try to get this sheet from the website, print it out and fasten it to the drivers sunshield, which is an exponated location for rescuers - sometimes time is everything !
