Will Nanotech's Global Nature Complicate Ethics?

Posted August 26, 2006 10:00 AM

The market for nanotechnology products is expected to reach $25.5 billion globally, up from the 2005 figure of $9.4 billion, says a new market report. And we do mean globally: Russia recently opened a center for nanotechnology; Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is calling for a national nanotech strategy; and Slovenia is teaming with Israel on nano R&D. Given the strong call for risk management and the already fierce debate over the ethics of nanotechnology, it seems the increasingly cross-cultural nature of the market, combined with political conflict, stands to further complicate this already difficult topic.
