I figured I'd find you here.

Doesn't the software that creates the files for printing have some sort of validity/discontinuity (I made that up..not across jargon for this yet) check in it?

I can imagine lots of heartbreak and time wasted without some sort of automated check.

Cheers.

The software I use checks for valid modeling- non-manifold (i.e., continuity), holes in the mesh (another continuity issue), too many points or edges, etc. Although that tells me if the thing can be printed, it says nothing about how robust the design is. Fortunately, I am not currently designing for NASA, and I will claim that my many years of mechanical design serve me in good stead- and I have had no "product failures" yet (although I haven't really had any products in the market to fail so far). However, I have, on a couple of occasions, had the opportunity to assist others in repairing their designs...

I have a few prototypes made from a 3D printer. One is in a clinical trial right now and another will be in a couple of weeks. So far they are holding up great.
