Scotland to Build World's First Community-Owned Tidal Turbine

Posted August 25, 2012 4:31 PM

From INHABITAT:

As a country, Scotland has some of the most aggressive renewable energy targets in the world - the entire nation is working to be completely independent of fossil fuels in the next decade, and has pledged to use 100 percent renewable energy by 2020. You don't have to be an energy expert to know that's no small goal, so it's no surprise that Scotland is embracing practically every clean energy technology it can find. The country recently announced plans to build the world's first community-owned tidal turbine. The turbine will be deployed in the Bluemull Sound between the islands of Yell and Unst, and used to power a local ice plant and industrial estate. It will be owned by the North Yell community.

Is that it? Looks like a Minn Kota trolling motor to me. Does it flip over, while anchored? I don't really get it? Anyone?

Actually, Scotland has been doing a lot more interesting things than this particular turbine design...

It rotates on the base to face the tidal stream...

The problem with this approach is that it basically takes a "wind turbine" design and puts it under water. There are a lot better approaches that are more efficient at extracting energy from tidal currents.

Haven't read the link (yet), but the intro is over-egging it a bit. Many a bothy churns out smoke, even during Summer. In some areas there is a cultural liking for an open coal fire.

I'll shut my trap for now, because in general the point is correct. Scotland has many cutting edge projects on renewable energy. I shall be up there in a couple of days, and in a better position to get some first hand news on the latest projects.

If you get up to the Orkney's, that is where some significant work is being done with tidal and wave energy- experimental and grid connected.

Not going quite that far (Argyll), but my stepfather is an avid follower of all this stuff. There are a few projects I'm aware of, but I'll hang on until I'm up there and can get some first hand news on tghe latest. Give me a prod to remind me if I lapse - it's too easy to just climb some hill and chillout. I'll hold back until I can give some good links to various current projects - the OP was not far wrong about how much cool stuff is being done up there. The economics of it are questionable, but they are certainly testing the technology.
