The author's first sentence isn't quite right. It's not to produce sharper images but to enhance or brighten the image of certain structures in the body. For instance, the gadolinium tends to concentrate in tumor cells making them appear brighter in the image.

For instance in the image below you will see two brain scans. The one on the left has no contrast agent and the one on the right has the gadolinium indicated by the GAD designation. You can easily see how my brain tumor shows up with the contrast agent.

I don't care whether it's a metal or organic, just so long as it works.

Cheers !

Until you get gadolinium poisoning like I have from too many MRI's with contrast. It causes the skin to get very hard and rough also doesn't do your overall health any good because of the heavy metals so think about that before you go in for an MRI as routine and they want to use (GAT) I don't recommend it for someone that has had a lot of MRI's in the past it mostly affects the extremities but it can affect the torso as well. How many MRI's have you had? I've had five with no indication of any adverse effects. At about $2000 a pop, that's never a routine anything for me.

Here in the Midwest they tend to go the MRI route instead of X-Rays. That said one motorcycle crash. two truck crashes one injured hip from fall from ladder when little old lady hit ladder with shopping cart, one torn rotator cuff, two torn muscles in shoulder, and three reattached. all in one repair surgery from moving safes in the 1500-6000lb range. Then back in April while I was still healing from surgery on December 24th A young girl in a new Ford Fusion rear ended me while texting on her phone and driving at close to 50 mph. Causing my shoulder to tear the freshly repaired muscle in the front of my shoulder on the seat belt. I think Murphy is winning right now. The poisoning usually doesn't show up for years and there is a major class action case going on right now from the affects of GAT. That is why they are trying to find an alternative die for MRI'S. Tell me about it that doesn't include all of the really dumb things that I did as a kid. I am now 55 and paying for all of it. I have just recently been diagnosed with Poly Mialga Ruhmatica. It is a form of Fibermialga it can be very painful but you can't let it get you down, the day I stop because of the pain will be the day they close the lid on the pine box I built a few years ago for that occasion it would be needed, hoping that since I have it I wont need it. Isn't that how that one goes.Duke
