Particle Accelerators Could Make Spent Nuclear fuel 200x Safer

Posted September 26, 2012 11:25 AM

From DVICE:

Until we can manage to make renewable energy sources pay off, nuclear power is arguably (and feel free to argue this) one of the cleanest and safest methods of energy generation there is. One of the biggest problems is the dangerous spent fuel, but there may be a solution to that: particle accelerators.

Actually, the article mixed two processes together.

One is electronic reactor control.

The other is the elimination of the pesky actinides in the waste stream. Those are the 10,000+ years halflife nasties. As it turns out, very few isotopes fall into this category. Add (or remove) a neutron, and it changes into a harmless metal. The experiment was already completed in an old Chicago accelerator by a Nobel price winning physicist.
