Big Quakes Signal Changes Coming to Earth's Crust

Posted September 27, 2012 9:42 AM

From Science:

On April 11 of this year, an extraordinary cluster of earthquakes struck off Sumatra. The largest shock, magnitude 8.7, produced stronger ground-shaking than any earthquake ever recorded. And it surprised seismologists by triggering more than a dozen moderate earthquakes around the world. The quakes are also a sign of big changes to come in the Earth's crust. But chances are you don't remember the April 11 quake off Sumatra. That's because it was far offshore, so nobody got severely shaken, and it didn't produce a killer tsunami. But the event didn't simply fade away for Ross Stein at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif.

It is an interesting video and some of the connections in the comment section are also interesting. It reminds us that we really don't have a good handle on the frequency and cycles of plate tectonics. It is also a good reminder that we really do not have a good grasp of the effect of these movements and the release of gases that effect climates. This is what is so maddening of the models that the climate science is based. They have nothing but superfluous input on the release of carbon from methane hydrates that are also a part of the releases in these plate movements. I have searched for information on natural hydrate releases but it is very sparse.

Like SE mentions, the earth is always changing. If we are experiencing higher than activity, we should expect that climates may be more affected by this natural activity than anything man can throw at it. IMO.
