Back in my old salt Navy days, I had the privilege of being shot off of an aircraft carrier which ended up being an amazing rush. I was on the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower on a work up, which is basically gearing up and getting ready before the main deployment to make sure everything is working.
While out on the ship one of our squadron's planes broke down and had to land over in Cherry Point, N.C., which is a marine air station. I was told that since we were off the coast of North Carolina at the time that it would be easier to fly someone off the boat to fix it than to send someone from Virginia Beach. Well that 'someone' was me.
One of the pilots came up to me and said, "So you're going to be my back seater, huh? Hope you don't have a queasy stomach." I'm thinking to myself, "What have I gotten myself into?"
The next day I'm all set and ready to go, I've got my flight suit on and the pilot gives me a quick briefing on what was going to happen. He said that all I had to do was enjoy the ride, don't touch anything, and that if I had to puke that I should puke inside my flight suit and not all over the instruments in the plane. 'Nice and simple instructions' I thought.
Finally I'm getting into the plane and all buckled in and ready to go. Now since I've never done this before I'm getting a little bit nervous and excited. The canopy of the jet goes down and inside by my feet I see smoke all over the place. It was the hydraulics and coolant kicking in but at the time I didn't know.
I asked the pilot if there is a problem seeing all this smoke. The pilot is laughing now and says, "If it's a problem you're going to have to figure it out yourself because I'll have already ejected."
The engines are firing up and it's getting louder, then the catapult goes off and I'm flying down. The force was the most I've ever felt compared to any roller coaster ride. Then you see the ocean and the plane dips when it leaves the ship and when it does the force jerks you forward.
It's a scary moment when the plane first goes off because I'm thinking in the back of my mind, 'Please don't fail and go up so I don't crash.' Then the plane took off and away we went. So that was my first and only experience of getting shot off an aircraft carrier and it was better than any joy ride you can come up with at an amusement park.
