Here's a Really Fancy Prosthetic Hand

Posted November 11, 2012 12:54 PM

From mental_floss:

In this brief tech demo, Nigel Ackland shows off his new prosthetic hand, the bebionic v3. It's frankly amazing - here is an articulate, five-fingered hand, controlled via two muscle triggers near the elbow. Ackland lost his forearm six years ago in an accident at work; he now uses this prosthetic to do all sorts of things, including typing, cracking eggs, opening and pouring beer, you name it. Although it's not discussed in this video, the prosthetic can be concealed under a silicone glove, which reduces the Terminator vibe.

This is cool...but I would want it strong enough to crush the glass bottle!

This work is truly impressive.

I wouldn't call it 'fancy' though. Using 'fancy' to describe a creation of this caliber, doesn't do it justice.

While I realize that by dictionary definition the usage is not strictly incorrect, nuances of meaning often have significant impact on the message as a whole.

IMHO, when 'fancy' is used to describe an object or substance, it connotes an effort to distinguish and/or increase perceived value mainly through changes to presentation or outward appearance.

'Fancy cat litter' and 'Fancy tuna' both come to mind.

The quintessential example of 'fancy' as a physical description is the 'Fancy Goldfish'. Enhanced through selective breeding with features such as quadruple tail, bulging eyes and pillow-puff head, not to improved swimming speed, vision around corner, or glass crash test ratings, but for aesthetics alone....to each their own.

.

This bionic hand is far better than 'fancy'.
