I've been driving Volvos for almost twenty years now. I've owned a '78 242, an '85 244 and currently own an '88 245. Volvo discontinued the 240 in 1993, largely to make way for the 850. This was a major shift for Volvo--from stodgy RWD to a slightly more performance-oriented FWD platform. Of course, the cars were still boxy and still safe as hell.
