Guitars And Brains: Neuroscience Synchronization Happens In Musical Duets

Posted December 02, 2012 12:22 PM

From Science 2.0:

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin have shown that synchronization emerges between brains when making music together, and even when musicians play different voices. Johanna Sänger and her team used electrodes to record the brain waves of guitarists while they played different voices of the same duet. They say the results point to brain synchronicity that cannot be explained away by similitudes in external stimulation but can be attributed to a more profound interpersonal coordination.

I wonder if this accounts for the well known phenomena among A Capella vocalists of families having a smoother harmonic blend than non-family members. I have also noticed it among people who, though not biologically related, live together for long periods of time, and spend a good deal of free time together, even though the free time is not necessarily spent singing.

Interesting findings.

And Yes, it does occur in other cooperations too, when the partners perceive effortless sync. of their efforts. The rythm of the music is relentless and obvious for all, but the same is visible to all participants, and some observers in other areas.

So, yes, it appears to be one of the general organizing principles.
