Technology industry giants on Tuesday announced that they are joining forces to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by making computers more energy efficient.
A group of 40 industry, U.S. government, environmental and consumer organizations pledged on Tuesday to reduce computers' power consumption by 50 per cent by 2010.
The group, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, includes industry giants such as Microsoft, Google and Intel.
"Today, the average desktop PC wastes nearly half of its power, and the average server wastes one-third of its power," Urs Hoelzle, senior vice-president of operations at Google, said in a written statement.
"We are asking businesses and individuals throughout the world to join with us to institute better power management of their computing equipment and purchase energy-efficient computers."
