Romulan Cloaking Device Becoming a Reality

Posted March 29, 2013 12:00 AM by Milo

Fun post for Friday.

Researchers at Nanyang University demonstrate the refractive qualities of Calcite to make a post it note 'disappear.'

Here you CANNOT see the Romulan War Bird in front of some open star clusters.

Researchers at Nanyang University demonstrate the refractive qualities of Calcite to make a post it note 'disappear.'

Erasmus Bartholin was the first to note the double refraction of iceland spar (Calcite) in 1669. You can get his Experimenta crystalli Islandici disdiaclastici quibus mira & insolita refractio detegitur as a free ebook.

Isaac Newton also experimented and reported on the phenomenon.

But the folks at Nanyang University got it posted to Youtube

Obvious applications include defense, organized crime, smuggling, and advertising.

I apologize for being such a skeptic, but when I see a very orderly striped background, it makes me think whether it was an essential part of making this "magic" happen, and what it would do to a natural scene - probably break it up and leave a clue that something unnatural is going on.

Also seems that a large cube of calcite was necessary to envelope a small stick in front and back, in order to make it disappear; try walking around with a properly scaled-up cube of calcite on your shoulders...

Except that the idea is viewpoint specific, meaning that it would be used to disguise objects in-place rather than moving. Hiding cameras, mics, and scanners in plain sight in predetermined view angles.
