Strange Things Do Happen at Full Moon

Posted June 14, 2007 10:31 AM

From LiveScience.com:

Recently BBC News reported that some British police departments have decided to add extra officers on nights with a full moon. The concern isn't over werewolves or vampires—no need to issue silver bullets or wooden stakes—but more human threats such as petty thieves and violent criminals. For years, some who work in police and emergency services (such as doctors and nurses) have anecdotally claimed that full moon nights are busier, crazier, and more dangerous than nights when the moon is dim. This perception may be rooted more in psychology than reality.

i have no data to back up my theory. the gravitational effect the moon has on the ocean tides has a similar reaction concerning brain activity and chemistry. the human body is comprised of 90% water, thus subject to the same forces that effect the tides.

Hi swoop72,

First off welcome to CR4. Quoting from your post;

"the human body is comprised of 90% water, thus subject to the same forces that effect the tides."

While this is true the effect is negligible and without highly sensitive equipment impossible to detect so I doubt that it could have any affect on you biology.

However, there are other ways the Moon could have an affect on us. Built into our body is a clock mechanism that is used to coordinate many of the bodies functions and if left alone this clock runs on a cycle that varies between about 25 to 30 hours. The reason we don't have a biological rhythm that keeps slipping out of synchronicity with the day is that it is reset each morning when you are exposed to bright light. While the light of the Moon is nothing like the sun it may be bright enough to upset the reset mechanism and for a day or so you biological clocks go haywire. Basically you would end up with a bad dose of jet lag until you system could sort itself out.

The full Moon dose however have an affect on nature and there are numerous events that are related to the tides. For example coral will always spawn during a particular full moon each year. The coral in a reef need to all spawn together otherwise they would not be able to breed and by spawning during a certain full moon the are ensuring there is a high tide and therefore dispersing their prodigy over the largest area possible.

There are numerous full Moon driven events in nature and while we ourselves may not be affected by the full Moon these full Moon driven events in nature may affect us.

Put simply rather us responding to the full Moon directly, we are responding to something that is itself caused, linked to or triggered by the full Moon.

Mind you, this is only speculation and from what I have seen elsewhere, there is no statistical basis that human beings act or do things differently when there is a full Moon.
