Posted April 13, 2013 5:28 PM

From Science 2.0:

• The problem - How to tell if a banana is senescent (old).
• The solution - Apply fractal Fourier analysis to the banana spots.

The computational method was jointly developed by the Department of Science and Food Technology, Universidad de Los Lagos, Chile, along with the Department of Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and the Departamento de Graduados e Investigación en Alimentos, Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas, Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Mexico.

I am reminded of an about-to-graduate University student Engineer, I gave him a simple real-world problem to solve during his real-world work experience and said "right, what is the first thing you do?".

I knew his answer before I even asked the question, and sure enough the first thing he said was "model the problem!". I then said "no, you do this, then this, then this and it's done" (it was like a 3 minute technician-level job).

He learnt quite a lot that day, especially that modeling has its place but like any tool you really need to use the right one for the job at hand.

Sounds like a candidate for an IG Nobel prize.
