Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Skills 101: How to Double Clutch

If you're going to learn how to double clutch, you need to learn on an old truck. Granted, if you're going to drive an old truck, you'll need to learn how to double clutch anyway, but at least an old truck was built to be tough and take the abuse of grinding gears. So it's appropriate that YouTuber wagner59270 chose to demonstrate double clutching on his 1957 International Harvester S100.

A lot of sports cars had non-syncro gear boxes back in the 30's and 50's. I learned how to double clutch on an old MG sports car. The trick with those was speed. If you were too slow, gear crunching would result.

Double clutching is too much work for me. I prefer to learn the trucks speed Vs RPM characteristics and just do gear to gear slip and go shifting.

There was a line about double clutching in the first Fast and Furry-est movie that made me cringe.

Being a car guy, I can't watch movies that are supposed to be about cars that are written by people who know NOTHING about cars!

I never finished the movie by the way. . .
