Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Looks like an early defibrillator. Grab hold of one lead and place the other near your heart and switch on. Tell us what happens. Seriously though great find, I've never seen a welder like it. The oldest welder I've ever seen is my uncle, he's 88 now. When I was a lot younger my old uncle had an arc welder ( or is that an Ark welder ) that was as big as a bar fridge and had open sides with what looked like a lot of bed springs inside.

Don't recall ever seeing THAT particular model, back in the day when we repaired and/or rewound anything brought in the door... (even if we had to go get it on a flatbed, to bring it into the shop). Ahhh, "those good ol' days"...(!) April 1983 issue of EASA mag (Electrical Apparatus Service Association) saw me on the cover, as the interviewer/photographer who was doing a story on the shop thought it "fascinating" that we would troubleshoot/tear-down and fix a "hot-need-it-bad-and-quik" item right before the customer's very eyes....

looks like something out of the Norfleet shop from the late 60's. is there a makers mark on it? Norfleet made small welders like this in San Deigo

I going to say either an early model Forney or a Zeus AC stick welder.

1910 - 1930's at the latest.
