Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Skills 101 -- Off-Road Driving Techniques

Once you leave the pavement, pretty much all of your on-road driving techniques become null and void. Off-road driving takes a completely different mindset and skillset, the basics of which this Land Rover-produced video - uploaded to YouTube by Anderzander in two parts - aims to teach. Not only does it cover how to operate a Land Rover of that era, but it also gets into picking the correct speed, instructs on how to drive in sand and mud, and includes such utterly British lines as "a Land Rover immobilised is a moral defeat for the driver."

Watch the videos on Hemmings Daily.

Yeah I noticed that the first time I drove my SUV across my yard to the door of my (walk-out) basement. I had to step on the brake to go faster, play a ZZ Top CD to down-shift and turn the steering wheel to the left to stop the car. Weird. The part where the car levitated when I turned on the headlights was pretty cool.

Yeah, I thought the first sentence was a bit of absurd hyperbole as well.

I've often wondered what motivates people to write stupid things all in the name of attention grabbing introductory sentences when all it really does, is to cement in my mind that the writer is an idiot. Unfortunately, a poorly written introduction taints what might have otherwise been a good piece of writing.
