Aging Society Megatrend – Impacts Precision Machining

Posted June 28, 2013 12:00 AM by Milo

This post looks at the megatrend of Aging Society and its potential impacts on our precision machining businesses. It is based on a presentation I attended at HORN Technology Days.

Our future is determined more by societal demands than it is by our workforce and current capability.

Why Aging Society is my choice for most impactful megatrend for our industry

  • Annual worldwide growth trend of 5% increase in Medical Technology Developments is 2X -3X current GDP growth. (Economically compelling)
  • Who is against improving the quality of life of the people we love? (Emotionally compelling)
  • Growth in the sector of Endoprosthetics- Human Spare Parts. (Aging and active population makes this compelling)

Because of this megatrend, our industry can expect to see growing opportunities in the production of

  • Surgical tools and instruments
  • Human spare parts and hardware (Bone screws, implants (including dental), joints, and hardware)
  • More challenging materials to process - ceramics, titanium, magnesium, and composites.

What will the keys be to growing in participation in this field in the future?

  • Flexibility and speed of processes and capacity
  • Systems built on assuring quality
  • Taking advantage of cost effective technologies to build in process assurance, and cost effective minimum waste provision of parts.

Over the long run, our businesses seldom grow faster than GDP. Knowing that the impacts of our aging society will grow faster than GDP provides a roadmap for savvy managements to plot their course to use their companies to serve this growing market.

You can see the aging of society every day - at work, shopping, and even in our schools (universities).

What are you doing to meet the demands that this megatrend is creating for your precision machining business?

Horn is working on developing tooling technologies and processes to improve your capability and performance, improve cost effectiveness and innovate your production.

New technologies call for - new tooling technologies. Thread Whirling Head for Bone Screws by HORN.

What are you doing to take advantage of this growing 2X-3X faster than GDP opportunity?

While I understand the emotions behind it, let me summarize the aspects discussed:

1,. We all age.

2,. Our neolithic ancestors - on an average - were old at 20.

3,. Our grandparents - similarly - were old at 50 or 60.

4,. We supposed to be "old" at 70 or above.

5,. By that time, the attending biochemistry grows at an impressive rate. Simple measures do no cut it. On the other hand, exponentially growing biochemistry does.

6,. The funny question is, which one?!?

Welcome to the interesting new world, fellows and gals. And yes, there is societal this or that in the mix, but who cares?!?

So you are saying in the long run, everybody dies? I giess I see the greater opportunity in the short run... Milo

Yes, Milo. On the long run we all die. Sorry, but that truism is still valid.

What is of interest is, that if all that is finessed right, your life is a mostly horizontal line pointing to the right, and then drops off suddenly, when the circumstances cannot be maintained, and you (or I) suddenly got to go. A proper way out.

If you are functional, you are still useable, independently of your age, if not in the same function as a young one. I - for one -have not forgotten my skills.

Have you?

-----------------------------------------------------------

At that point, your biochemistry start to become important. As your internal mechanics description.

The day is coming when someone will get a third arm.

MrGeneRall,

Will it be on centerline, do you think?

Cheers.

Well, that day is here. There are successful research programs for both mind controlled and nerve conducted prostheses,
first for V.A. application. Then NASA has an ongoing program for telepresence, where the robotic arm can be virtually
configured any which way, according the user's liking. This part might be more in home on Chelsea's Bio... thread.

As to the thrust of the original note, I have some notes to add:
1,. Spare parts building, mechanical or biological is a necessity.
However, I prefer repair in-situ with own stemcells to new specs.
2,. I am very strongly prefer my original equipment, in good repair
for a long time. And I am willing to go to great length for it.
3,. There is a basic rule in biochemistry: live a year longer by your
own effort, you get 2 from the fresh advancement of the knowledge.
4,. All that amounts to a new, vigorous 60 years old generation, not
necessarily willing to sit on its collective hand.
5,. Automatization is moving in at an exponential rate. Greatly easing
physical workload, at the same time displacing human workers.
5.1,.Unless the economy (any which way that is measured in the new era)
expands commensurately.

Starting with your note, all that amounts to, that in a sane economy
the older worker shall be retained according their experience, as I
doubt, they are keen to participate in the 40-60 h/week rat race.

At the same time, the young ones leave education with a loan burden,
and a large portion of substandard skillset for real life. And they
desire good positions for themselves. Tat is a pressure on the market.

And at the same time the fair haired boys (and gals) exiting the
business and law schools, could not lead to safety a blind cow from a
burning barn. In real life, that's it, IMHO.

These 3 trends are at cross purposes, so to speak. And that will
lead to interesting times.
