Simulating 1 Second of Real Brain Activity Takes 40 Minutes, 83K Processors

A team of Japanese and German researchers have carried out the largest-ever simulation of neural activity in the human brain, and the numbers are both amazing and humbling.The hardware necessary to simulate the activity of 1.73 billion nerve cells connected by 10.4 trillion synapses (just 1 percent of a brain's total neural network) for 1 biological second: 82,944 processors on the K supercomputer and 1 petabyte of memory (24MB per syapse). That 1 second of biological time took 40 minutes, on one of the world's most-powerful systems, to compute.

So you are saying that the machines taking over the world probably won't happen for a quite a while?

Especially if they are running on windows based software?

Just doing some rough numbers suggest that when compared to a standard 1 processor computer our brains full activity for one second would equal around 6300 years of computer processor work.

Memory wise that would also suggest a need for around 100 petabytes of ram as well.

So one average human brains normal activity is equivalent to around 830,000 home computers?

I really don't foresee the machines taking us over anytime soon.

Imagine that!

And this part of our bodies became this complex and organized after this huge explosion, and after hundreds of billions of years we now have this extraordiarily complex brain that just somehow "evolved". Whew, that's amazing.

There is a Designer of what we are and what we are discovering in our Universe. What you and I are is not the result of randomness and chaos. Even with all that has been discovered about our bodies and the Universe we don't even come close to understanding it all because of it's complexity. The more we learn the more we realize how much we don't know/how much is yet to be learned.
