Taking Animals Out Of Laboratory Research

Posted June 22, 2007 3:45 PM

From ScienceDaily Headlines:

Pioneering work to reduce the use of animals in scientific research — and ultimately remove them from laboratories altogether — has received a major boost at The University of Nottingham. A laboratory devoted to finding effective alternatives to animal testing has been expanded and completely remodelled in a £240,000 overhaul designed to hasten the development of effective non-animal techniques. Scientists hope that by developing the use of cell and tissue cultures, computer modelling, cell and molecular biology, epidemiology and other methods, they will one day be able to completely remove animals from medical research — while still maintaining crucial work to defeat diseases that affect millions of people.

Well intentioned folks who wish to protect our furry friends - and I have four cats - must remember that if you don't test the drug, device or surgery on an a dog (or cat) first then your first test is on your patient. Lower life forms aren't enough.

The armadillo, the guinea pig and the Rhesus monkey chemistry is most related to ours. Dog labs, now closed, were used at major hospitals to train surgeons in new procedures. Today the labs closed and the surgeon learns on you and I.

I love my pets as family. But I wouldn't sacrifice a human life for them. And that's what some are advocating and put into law.

The willful endangerment of human life in the name of compassion is evil. I love my animals (dog and cat) but if I had to sacrifice one to save my child, there would not be an instants hesitation.

I think you nailed it, Sir. So far I haven't heard one animal rights activist offer to take the place of an animal. Those Buddhists in Viet Nam who set themselves on fire in protest of the war were serious. These screeching, blood tossing, cry-babies are not serious.

Nature is a heck of a lot less kind than our medical experiments. True, there are some horrific things going on, and it makes me sad for the little critters. But I cannot point to one human being and say that they should take the place of an animal.

Those who claim they could think of a few people who should take the animals place should offer themselves first.

Oh they are serious alright, mad enough to grave rob the body of the grandmother of people downstream from the mine face, as it were. These people are completely without compassion when it comes to their fellow human beings, all under the banner of animal welfare. At what point does a cause like that, Worthy as it is, warrant intimidation, bullying, threats and physical violence. I have nothing but contempt for these people. If you want to get a company to change its ways, buy all means advertise what they are doing. How many pet owners would carry on buying Iams products when they have seen the evidence of their testing?

Ok..Ok..Rant over..
