The reality of robotics in the 21st Century is quite different, though. The world manufacturing community is focusing on ways to assimilate robots into the humanized workplace, not replace humans entirely. In contrast to our traditional perception of boxlike, metallic robots from days past, humanoid robots look and act a lot more human. Maybe that's why they promise to make good coworkers for humans. Tasks can be divided between robots and humans depending on what each is better at doing.

Well in defence of the robot it was programmed to grab rocks and a lot of people I know, well..... they do seem to have nothing but rocks between their ears.

First, Drones (or more correctly, Remote Piloted Vehicles) are not autonomous and are simply complex mechanical extensions of humans. They require a human to activate, pilot, and fire any weapons.

The only difference between an RPV and a fighter jet is where the pilot sits.

Second, that "law" is the product of science fiction. It has no bearing on reality. Truly autonomous killing machines are a ways off (but under development) and the rules of engagement have not yet been sorted out.

I suspect that even autonomous machines will be under human supervision with the machines providing more control over evasion and defensive measures and relieving the operator of those tasks. However, target selection and and actual fire commands are likely to be under human control for some time.

well since you put it that way...

The robots in my facility are activated, programmed and executed by humans. So I'm saying that autonomous robots are far off in the future also. Truly, I don't think we should consider cleverly disguised sensors that detect a broken field of a human coworker as part of any intellectual thoughts of a robot.

I was being sarcastic about the "3 Laws", I know where they come from. I have been an Asimov fan since I was a kid. But I bet you in Florida, you have the right to defend yourself against a rampaging, murderous robot with the stand your ground laws.
