GE Wants To "Power Up" Older Wind Turbines

Posted October 12, 2013 4:54 PM

From Renewable Energy News - RenewableEnergyWorld.com:

Earlier this year GE launched a package of package of technologies and services to improve output from its newer turbines like the 2.5-120, calling them "brilliant" at predicting and producing wind energy. Now it's bringing those same capabilities to its existing turbine fleet by packaging them into a new suite called "PowerUp" to improve older turbines' output and profitability.

Tweaking. Getting a little bit more with what you have. Cross platform improvements. Not only is it good engineering, but the (small p) political optics are in place. Job creation is implied.

The encouraging line in this article was "they are young enough not to need replacement." There will come a time when the entire fleet will need to be replaced. But its not now.

We are clearly moving into the golden age of wind turbine generation. So how's that workin' out for ya?

One of the engineering tweaks mentioned in the article is to make the blades silent. Or at least, quieter.
